Why Neuropsychological Testing?

If an individual is experiencing any type of problem with thinking, a neuropsychological evaluation may be needed. Such problems could involve reduced attention and concentration, poor short-term memory, difficulties with decision-making, reduced visual perception, or poor academic performance. Multiple factors may cause these types of difficulties including head injury, drug or alcohol addiction, stroke, dementia, childhood learning problems, recurrent seizures, advancing age, or psychiatric issues.

A variety of thinking problems and their contributing factors may occur at any period of life, and neuropsychological testing helps to explore the nature and severity of those problems. Through testing and evaluation, the client or patient will achieve an increased sense of awareness and insight regarding his or her neurocognitive strengths and weaknesses. As a result, that individual is then able to more fully understand how those aspects of thinking may contribute to her or his current level of functioning in various life domains. The test findings of a neuropsychological evaluation additionally help to guide treatment planning, which may involve recommendations for accommodations in work or classroom settings as well as changes in lifestyle to help the individual function at an optimal level.

What is Neuropsychological Testing?

Neuropsychological testing examines the study of brain-behavior relationships and helps to determine the potential presence of brain dysfunction. The evaluation procedure consists of a clinical interview in which the individual discusses his or her developmental and social history. Then, the individual completes various types of hands-on tasks that measure different facets of neurocognition such as intellect, attention and concentration, language, executive function, visuospatial abilities, learning and memory, fine motor skills, and mental speed. Neuropsychological testing may also involve personality assessment, which aims to explore the individual’s mental health functioning. Dr. Antonio Rotondo then generates a neuropsychological report that includes diagnostic impressions and recommendations, which he reviews with the patient or client. The length of these types of evaluations may vary. Rotondo Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy can answer any additional questions you have.
